Split or Sawn

A bat billet is basically a 2.75-inch diameter by 37-inch long wooden dowel. There are two ways to get this product from a raw log: splitting or sawing.

Splitting maintains the integrity of the fiber by keeping the cells intact throughout the length of the billet. Log bolts are wedged apart by hand (maul and wedge) or with a hydraulic splitter. The tangential slope of grain (face grain) is straight and true because wood only splits on that slope. Almost every split billet will meet the MLB’s three-degree tangential slope requirement. Baseball bats will still break, but split billets basically eliminate the possibility of multiple-piece fractures and flying fragments that can potentially injure players or bystanders.

Logs are sawn into squares with a large circular saw or band saw. The sawyer follows the grain structure as much as possible when cutting. Straight grain for bats is guaranteed by the people that grade after the doweling process, not the manufacturing process itself. Sawn billets can still meet the three degree tangential slope requirement by MLB, however the percentage is normally lower compared to splits.
